2016 Awards

CITC Outstanding Apprentice Awards

Ms Meegan Fitzharris, MLA Minister for Higher Education, Training and Research and the Chair of the CITC, Mr Bill Cleary OAM, presented the prestigious Industry Outstanding Graduating Apprentice Award to Timothy Hannon.  Timothy was also successful in winning the Outstanding Graduating Carpentry Qualification.

This year’s annual Construction Industry Training Council (CITC) Awards continued to celebrate some important firsts.

For the first time in 14 Years the CITC received a number of nominations for the Outstanding Indigenous Apprentice category.  Nominations in this category were received for Plumbing, Cabinetmaking and Plant Operations.

Coen Harwood was successful in winning 3 of these Awards; Outstanding Indigenous Cabinet Making; Outstanding Industry Cabinet Making and the overall Outstanding Indigenous Apprentice Award.

The CITC also recognised the diversity of skills and work requirements for Apprentices in the Air Conditioning Trade.  It acknowledged William Bates for a new category; Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning and Douglas Nichols for the traditional Refrigeration Qualification.

The Executive Director of the CITC, Mr Vince Ball, informed the audience of over 360 guests the closeness in selecting the winners.  “He said that the closeness was not only across all the Trades but also in selecting the overall winner with only millimeters separating the Apprentices.”

“The CITC is committed to quality training and professional development for the construction industry and we encourage employers to maintain their commitment to the employment and training of the construction industry apprentices.”

He mentioned the ongoing debate into the reduction of Apprentices for our Industry in the ACT and said “You are probably aware of the ongoing media interpretation of the reduction in our Trades.  I would like to assure everyone that our numbers have increased this Year and we as an industry have continued to maintain our numbers over the past 8 Years.  Our major problem is finding enough people interested in signing up for a Trade as we have employers looking to sign Apprentices on a Contract of Training.”

The CITC congratulates all the nominees and the overall winners.
