Strathnairn Construction Project

Belconnen Community Service, Canberra City Care, Bricklayer Training Australia, Construction Industry Training Council, OZ HELP, Training Fund Authority, West Belconnen Local Services Network and Riverview Projects collaborated to deliver an accredited training initiative.  The focus was to improve two community facilities within the West Belconnen community while at the same time developing skill sets for local people in the construction industry through accredited training delivery.

This initiative focused on working with individuals living within the West Belconnen and Belconnen community who were disconnected from the labour market and looking for pathways to further education, training and employment.  This included cohorts who were youth, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, culturally and linguistically diverse, parents returning to work and long term unemployed.

The graduation event showcased all participants’ individual stories and also the strong partnerships between stakeholders involved in delivering the program.  Currently three participants have secured employment, five participants are undertaking work trails for apprenticeships in their chosen field and the others are working hard on where their next step in the journey will be.

Our community involvement

We are actively involved in a number of school-based programs to address long-term skills shortages and to introduce work opportunities and training to students.

Our programs provide a unique opportunity for students to gain real experience in the industry accross a wide range of trades. We work with parents, students and teachers by holding career information sessions at schools and colleges as well as holding industry information sessions.

Primary Schools

We have been working with Latham and Palmerston Primary schools for a number of years on student construction projects. We plan to extend this project into other local schools.
